Current Priorities

To proclaim the gospel and establish churches among the Taiwan working class people, the majority of which self-identify as Minnan. This is done through community service, personal evangelism, relational evangelism, and special events. To make contact with families, two camps for elementary students are held annually (Winter at Chinese New Year and in the summer). In recent months we have been saying good-bye as we are departing for retirement after 19 years living in the community. The baton has been passed to a Taiwanese pastor to continue the ministry.

Vision

Our desire is to see the Baozhong Alliance Church grow numerically and in spiritual maturity so that it becomes a lasting beacon of hope and help to the community around it. The desire is to see more residents discover the freedom and blessings of believing in Christ. Local church leadership has a five-year plan to hopefully move from the current rented facility to one which they will own. 

Bio

The gospel entered Lorne's life when he was about four-years-old. His parents and he professed Christ as Saviour. From that time, Lorne continued to pursue a life in relationship with Christ. When he was about 12 years old, a guest speaker at a church prayer meeting taught on the filling of the Holy Spirit and our responsibility to present our lives as a sacrifice to Christ. Lorne did so, determined to live for God in whatever life path that God provided. He had a sense that there was a strong possibility that God wanted to lead him towards cross-cultural gospel ministry.

While studying cell biology at university, Lorne met Kathy-Lu at an Alliance church. He asked God to confirm it to be his will for a life-long partnership by calling her independent of his call to cross-cultural missions. God did that and the common life direction has helped their marriage relationship over the years.

Kathy-Lu was raised in a Christian family where her parents were involved in leadership at an Alliance church. She learned about the Christian life, but it was not until her teens that she made a personal commitment to have Christ as the Lord of her life. As a young adult, Kathy-Lu went on a short-term mission trip to Guam. God opened her eyes to the need of people to hear the gospel. She returned home with a commitment to take further studies in order to be a cross-cultural gospel worker.

Lorne and Kathy-Lu applied with the Alliance in Canada to be sent cross-culturally to a region that had a great need to hear the gospel. There was greater interest in East Asia and Pacific Islands, but a willingness to go where God would lead. Taiwan was recommended. God used His Word and life circumstances to affirm that they should pursue that location. They were appointed to Taiwan in 1990.

After language study, they were involved in a new initiative church start. Later they did discipleship ministry, evangelistic Bible studies, Field administration, and teaching at the Taiwan Alliance Theological College. Most recently they have worked in a rural community, using life-touching-life to share the gospel with Taiwan's working class people. Most of them speak the Minnan dialect of Chinese and identify as followers of the traditional Taiwanese religions. (It is a folk religion that blends Taoism, Buddhism, Confucianism, and Animism.) 

As of July 2026, the Whites will have served 36 years in Taiwan. After a one-year home assignment they will retire in Canada.
